Tofu has become a part of Western cuisine. Many are familiar with tofu, using it as a substitute for beef, fish or chicken. As many Westerners lean towards vegetarian and vegan diets, tofu’s popularity increases. Despite this, many do not know the history of Chinese tofu.

Origins of Chinese Tofu

Tofu comes from China. Despite this, very few people actually know what it is made of and how it got started. There are several stories. Some say a chef experimented with soybeans. Another legend says that someone mixed up bean curd to feed their parents who did not have any teeth.

Another legend says that the grandson of a Chinese emperor in the Han Dynasty was on a quest for immortality. He tried to make an elixir for everlasting life. His failure was the success we know as tofu.

Did we mention that tofu is healthy? It is full of proteins and contains plenty of amino acids. Tofu doesn’t have a lot of calories, so it is great for someone who is watching their weight or diet.

Types of Tofu

There are a variety of tofu types, with various textures. Which one is best for you? You can get tofu super soft or extra firm. It comes down to what you’re dietary and cooking desires are.

Soft Tofu is great in scrambled egg dishes, omelets or even when making lasagna. Firm tofu is great in salads and works well as a cheese alternative. Baked tofu works wonders in baked dishes or even sandwiches. You might find it in your favorite Mexican fajita.

Preparing Tofu

The main issue with tofu is cleaning it and making sure that it is dry when you use it when cooking. If you store it properly, it can be used for several months after it is purchased.
