Union Square is one of the most iconic locations in Manhattan, New York. This location, brings together students, tourists, shoppers, performers and everyday New Yorkers to one location. The plaza slash park, brings together Flatiron, East Village and Gramercy to one location.

The vibrant and bustling location draws over 63 million visitors each year. Why? What is there to do in Union Square? How did this location become so popular?

A Brief History

Originally named Union Place,  the public park has been an open space in Manhattan since 1811. The square has played a role in American history as well, hosting large political gatherings during the Civil War.

Things To Do

Eat – When it comes to dining, there is plenty of diversity. Whether you’re interested in vegan, Mexican or authentic Chinese food, it’s all there. Silky Kitchen is one of the most popular Chinese restaurants in Union Square, specializing in Hunan rice noodle dishes. The ABC Kitchen offers a wide variety of American dishes to choose from as well. There are plenty of places to get something quick to eat and there are no shortage of cafes.

Lounge – Who says you have to do anything? Why not sit on a bench and people watch? Along with Bryant Park, Union Square has been noted as a great place to see so many people. Everyone from backpackers, skateboarders, performers, models and the occasional celebrity.

Shopping – Union Square is also the home to two of the most important book stores in the city, Strand Bookstore, and Barns and Noble. If you need to get some groceries, you’ll find a Whole Foods here as well. If you want fresh greens and vegetables, you’ll find a Farmer’s Market here, year-round, on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The other great thing about this iconic public square is accessibility. You can get to Union Square by taking 4/5/6/L/N/Q/R/W trains.
