Silky Kitchen: Spicy Chinese Food

Do you like spicy Chinese food? Does your mouth water when you think about fresh noodles, simmering vegetables and of course, tangy spice that makes your mouth water? If this hasn’t been your experience with Chinese food, it’s probably because you haven’t had food at Silky Kitchen in Union Square.

Most Americans are accustomed to routine Chinese dishes, like egg rolls, fried rice, and wonton soup. If you asked them to describe the type of Chinese food they like, they probably won’t be able to tell you.

Why Our Food Is So Spicy

Our food is from Hunan where spicy dishes are part of the tradition. The high levels of spice in the food help us deal with the elements. Ever heard of Chairman Mao Zedong? The chairman was also from Hunan and he was noted as saying that a person could not be a true revolutionary unless they ate spicy food.

So when we get started, we created the restaurant menu with our traditional culture in mind.

Spicy Chinese Food in New York City

Our journey started with our with our owner, Simon Shue, who is actually an NYU graduate. While on a return visit to China, with his wife, they visited her hometown in Hunan. Simon grew up in China, but he never experienced such delicious noodles, combined with the awesome toppings found in Hunan.

Simon and his wife thought it would be a good idea to open a Hunan styled restaurant in New York City. So, they opened the restaurant and had a chef from Hunan design the dishes.

Considering that most New Yorkers are new to Hunan food and Hunan spice, they created the menu with a scalable amount of spice for each dish. When you visit our restaurant, you’ll notice that you can order your dish with no spice or raise the level to extra spicy.

We recommend that you start out with medium and work your way up. See you soon.
